Thailand-Indonesia agree to use ASEAN’s role to bring peace back to Myanmar

Lao PDR, Thai and Indonesian foreign ministers agree to use ASEAN's role to bring peace back to Myanmar. Mr. Maris Sangiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, held bilateral discussions with Mrs. Retno Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia. Both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations between Thailand and Indonesia, especially in promoting cooperation between the private sectors of the two countries to increase trade and investment volume in various fields, such as food security and energy security. In addition, both sides exchanged views on the regional situation of mutual interest, especially ASEAN's role in helping to bring peace back to Myanmar. Indonesia attached importance to Thailand's role as Myanmar's neighbor in this matter and the two countries will coordinate more closely. The Minister of Foreign Affairs also held bilateral discussions with Dr. Kao Kim Houm, Secretary-General of ASEAN, on strengthening the ASEAN Community, creating unity and being able to effectively c ope with challenges, supporting Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN, and addressing key issues in the region. During the discussion, the Ministers commended the role of the ASEAN Secretary-General in promoting the ASEAN Community and reaffirmed Thailand's readiness to support Timor-Leste's accession to ASEAN through capacity building, training and scholarship programs.
