Foreign Ministers meet in ASEAN to solve Myanmar problems

Lao PDR, Laos is ready to invite international organizations to discuss the situation in Myanmar, while Thailand is ready to host the meeting and will donate more than 9 million baht to support the AHA Center in humanitarian assistance. Mr. Maris Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Vientiane, where the meeting discussed the situation in Myanmar after the sub-group meeting of Indonesia, Laos and Malaysia, the past, present and future ASEAN Chairs, or the ASEAN Troika, was held yesterday (24 July). Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lao PDR, as the Chair of ASEAN, informed the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting that the meeting will be held by inviting countries that have appointed special representatives on Myanmar, which may include Ms. Julie Bischoff, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on Myanmar, to join the meeting. In the future, the Troika will be extended to incl ude other countries. This is not a new idea, but something that Thailand has proposed before, and other countries do not object. Mr. Maris said at the meeting that Thailand is ready to support the proposals of the Troika meeting and expressed its readiness to be a venue for discussions to lead to discussions that all parties can participate in, which will increase the level of humanitarian assistance in Myanmar. Mr. Maris also announced at the meeting that Thailand is ready to donate another 250,000 US dollars, or approximately 9 million baht, to support the AHA Center's efforts to promote the implementation of the ASEAN Five Resolutions. Reporters reported that at the meeting, many ASEAN countries expressed their delight at the humanitarian assistance that Thailand provided to Myanmar last March and supported further action on the matter. The meeting also discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, expressing concern that the situation would not escalate and concerns about behaviors that could incre ase tensions, and urging relevant parties to return to negotiations and create an atmosphere conducive to discussions. As for the situation in the Gaza Strip, Thailand has talked about solving the problem based on the principle of a two-state solution and trying to achieve a ceasefire, including the release of the other six Thai hostages who are still being held in the Gaza Strip.
